Story of Daksha Mandir Haridwar
Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as Daksha madir haridwar is located in Kankhal, a town near Haridwar in Uttarakhand, India. It is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple holds great mythological and historical significance.
According to Hindu mythology, Daksha Prajapati, the father of Goddess Sati (the first wife of Lord Shiva), organized a grand yagna (sacrifice) but did not invite Lord Shiva. When Sati learned about this, she felt deeply hurt and went to the yagna against Shiva’s wishes. Unable to bear the humiliation meted out to her husband, Sati self-immolated in the sacrificial fire.
In his grief and anger, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava, the dance of destruction, carrying Sati’s burnt body. To calm him down and prevent further destruction, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to dismember Sati’s body. The places where her body parts fell are believed to be the Shakti Peethas, and the spot where her father performed the yagna and insulted Lord Shiva is where the Daksha Mahadev Temple stands today.
The temple is visited by thousands of devotees, especially during the holy month of Shravan (July-August), and on special occasions like Mahashivaratri. The architecture of the temple is a blend of modern and ancient styles, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of India. Devotees come here to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings for prosperity, peace, and fulfillment of their wishes.
